In our 2010 study with Resources for the future, NEPI’s modeling showed that natural gas has the potential to displace a significant amount of diesel fuel if the price differential between diesel and natural gas is sufficient. However, there are other issues facing truck operators besides that price differential. In this paper, Anna Lee Deal examines those issues, and discusses the operating concerns of trucking companies with respect to the switch to natural gas. As she notes, some of the key infrastructure and engine issues are being addressed in 2012 and 2013.
October 2012: In response to the interest generated by this paper, we have posted the model described in the paper.
